TaxUpdates Privacy Policy
Last updated: 31 May 2026
TaxUpdates is built and maintained as an independent, single-developer project. This privacy policy explains how the app handles your data — the short version is we never collect the figures you enter, and we collect no personal identifiers. The only data that ever leaves your device is anonymous crash diagnostics (described below) and anything you choose to write to us.
Data we do not collect
- We do not require or collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, or any personal identifiers.
- We do not use advertising or third-party advertising/tracking SDKs.
- We do not collect, store, or transmit any of the figures you enter (salary, savings, dividends, gains, IR35 answers, etc.).
- The app has no user accounts and no login.
- We operate no servers of our own.
What stays on your device
- All tax calculations are performed entirely on your device.
- Information you enter is held in the running app only and is not persisted, shared, or transmitted.
- Your acceptance of the in-app disclaimer is stored locally on your device using the system’s standard local storage. It is not transmitted anywhere.
Crash diagnostics
- To keep the app reliable, released versions use Sentry to report crashes and errors. This is a diagnostics service, not analytics or advertising.
- A crash report contains technical information only: the error and stack trace, your device model, operating system version, and the app version. It is tied to an anonymous, Sentry-generated identifier — not to you.
- We deliberately configure Sentry so that crash reports do not include your IP address, screenshots, on-screen content, or any of the figures you enter into the app.
- Crash diagnostics run only in the released App Store build. They are disabled during development.
- Sentry processes this data on our behalf. See the Sentry privacy policy.
Outbound requests
- The Updates tab fetches public tax-policy content directly from gov.uk using their public Search API. The request is made from your device to gov.uk. We have no servers in the middle and no access to whatever logs gov.uk may keep of public API requests.
- When you tap a source link (in the Updates feed, on a deadline card, or in Settings → Sources), it opens that page in your device’s browser. Once you are on the third-party site you are subject to their own privacy practices.
Third-party services we link to
- gov.uk — UK government content. See gov.uk privacy notice.
- Sentry — anonymous crash diagnostics in released builds. See Sentry’s privacy policy.
- Apple App Store — handles app distribution. See Apple’s privacy policy.
- Expo Application Services (EAS) — used to build and submit the app, not used at runtime. Does not receive any user data.
Children’s privacy
The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone.
Permissions the app requests
The app may request the following iOS permissions:
- None at first launch. No location, no contacts, no notifications, no camera, no microphone, no photo library.
- iOS may show standard system prompts if you use the Export PDF feature in any of the decision tools (e.g. to save to Files or share via AirDrop). Any sharing happens at the system level and is your choice — the app receives no information about what you do after the share sheet opens.
